About Susan

Memphis Lawyer Susan Mackenzie is an experienced litigator who has represented clients in legal matters including: divorce, breakups and child custody; family protection; misdemeanor criminal defense and personal injury. She has also been trained as a mediator and Collaborative Divorce Attorney. Ms. Mackenzie particularly enjoys working closely with clients to solve their legal matters, finding creative solutions to their individual needs. Often, Ms. Mackenzie’s negotiating skills have led to resolution of clients’ legal matters without going to trial.

 

Ms. Mackenzie earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of Memphis, Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law in 1986. In addition to practicing law, Ms. Mackenzie dedicated three decades of her life to the advancement of civil rights for women, gays and lesbians, and racial or ethnic minorities. In 1999, she received the prestigious Women of Achievement Award for Courage. The Courage Award recognizes a woman in the Memphis community who, facing active opposition backed an unpopular cause in which she strongly believes. Mackenzie applies the same dedication when representing her clients.

 

Ms. Mackenzie has served on the Tennessee Bar Association Family Law Executive Committee since 2012, serving as Chair of the Executive Committee during the 2018-19 term. As part of this committee, she has helped draft legislation and guide public policy and family law in Tennessee.

 

In 1998, Mackenzie received the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center’s Community Peacemaker Award for the Advancement of Women. This commendation honored Mackenzie’s tireless advocacy for women’s civil rights. She has been recognized by the 2010 Cambridge Who’s Who Registry and was named to 2001’s Fifty Women Who Make a Difference by Memphis Woman Magazine.


She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Middle Tennessee State University, where she was named Chief Justice of the University General Sessions Court and was an avid member of the debate team.


In her spare time Ms. Mackenzie enjoys gardening, women’s basketball, cooking, watching cooking shows and traveling.
